PROJECT:
To Upgrade the Kakumbi Clinic in Mfuwe, Eastern Province, Zambia
The recent history
The earliest history of our involvement with
the Kakumbi Clinic is outlined in the
Background Page.
The Great Storm
Since last year a few things have happened.
About a month before we arrived, there was a huge storm with high winds.
This destroyed completely the roof on the garage/store just behind the
Clinic. It also lifted
off the coping from above the Female Ward and above the Lab, so that now the water
just pours in:

The new nurse's homes, which were finished
some time ago, still didn't have electrical power when we arrived. The roof on
Nurse Christine's house was also badly damaged, so she moved to her new
house even though she had no power there.
She moved into her new house just behind the
new water tower, kindly supplied and built by Andrea Bisaro the owner of
Mfuwe Lodge.
Doctor Jane's partner Joe, who was here at
the time of the Great Storm, did his best to repair the Clinic roof, but
there was only a limited amount that he could do with the resources
available to him out here. At first we saw the extent of the damage to
the roof as an opportunity to
get the Zambian Government involved in the Clinic Upgrade Project. Maybe they would feel obliged to
repair the roof themselves.
Alas no such prospect!
After several requests for money and support,
the Clinic was told that there were no funds even for repairs let alone any
major replacement of the old roof. So it looks like its still up to
us.
Forward!
Since arriving we have managed to get the
clinic measured and have prepared plan and elevation views. We have
also made numerous proposals which have been modified and fine-tuned:
Work continues apace!!
