Report made by Johnny and Grant June 2008:
Sponsor: Michael Bell
Grade: 10
In the autumn term of 2008 his uncle died, his uncle’s house burned down with all of Jimmy’s belongings in it and therefore destroyed, and the Headmaster at Lundazi wouldn’t accept the cheque which he gave him to pay his school fees.
School: now at Mfuwe Secondary School, but would like to go to Lundazi. He is working hard, coping well and getting average marks. There is no family in Lundazi (his uncle is in Mfuwe), but the connection is that one of the teachers whom he knows at Lundazi is from Mfuwe and would help to look out for him at Lundazi. Also he says there would be dedicated prep time at Lundazi which he feels is lacking at the moment. So he would like to spend 3 months at Lundazi with one month holiday in Mfuwe.
Travel to Lundazi will cost 85,000 each way.
He would have liked to go to Lundazi this term, but failed because there was no place for him.
Stays with his uncle near the Clinic but his uncle is often away, and Jimmy often has to go without eating. He is a good soccer player and has become captain of his school football team. While we were in Chipata his team came to play in a School Football Tournament at Chipata Day Secondary school.
November, 2008 update: Jimmy started at Lundazi but, shortly after starting, learned of his uncle’s death. He returned to Mfuwe for the funeral and then, a couple of days later, his uncle’s house burned down destroying at the same time everything that Jimmy owned including his books, clothes, shoes, etc. His Headmaster at Lundazi for some unexplained reason would not accept the cheque which Jimmy presented him with for his fees. Jimmy managed to borrow the money, but is now besieged by the lender for the return of the money. He seems to have been taken advantage of, and seems at the moment to be in a desperate state which we hope to remedy as soon as possible.
Well behaved sponsorship-wise, is a delightful boy, but very naïve and risks being taken advantage of.
