William and his house built for him by the villagers
Note: William is a saint among men. We first got to know him on a visit to Roger's (our Flatdogs housekeeper who retired when we were at Flatdogs Camp). When we arrived in the village I had noticed a couple of youngsters with handkerchiefs wrapped around their legs. After photographing some children I noticed one the girls with the handkerchief removed from her leg and an open ulcer exposed. I drew Johnny's attention to the girl and Johnny said that she needed to come into the clinic, get an injection and have dressings over the ulcer changed twice daily. William appeared from somewhere out of the woodwork and said that he had some dressings, but would get some more from the clinic. The next day he brought the young girl into the clinic (19km of dirt road with several big hills, and 4 km of flat tarmacked road) on the back of his bicycle and then took her home again. He has subsequently repeated this performance (once with Roger's wife). Johnny and I have given him various items - we presented him with an atlas of the world after I came back from Canada - some vegetable seeds (tomato, aubergine, etc) and gave him the money to buy two new tyres for his bicycle.
