Samson has tried to get into Chainama College (a branch of the School of Medicine of the University of Lusaka) to do the Environmental Health Officer course there. He went to Lusaka and wrote the entrance examination at Chainama and returned to Solwezi. However, Chainama is impossible to contact by phone, fax or e-mail, and he then never found out whether he was accepted or not. I couldn’t contact them either. So when we went to Lusaka in May I went in to the College and spoke to the registrar there. What we found out was: the exam Samson took was marked out of 150 points. The highest mark obtained by anyone writing the exam was 127 points out of 150. Those who got marks between 120 and 127 (25 students) were accepted. However, I found out that Samson got 105 and therefore didn’t qualify.
Samson has since applied for a course as an enrolled nurse at a college close to where he lives. He has been accepted and is to start his course on 4 July, 2008. He has to have his uniform made up, has bought the material for it, and is getting extremely excited about starting in Solwezi. If he does well in his enrolled nursing course he would like to go on to become a registered nurse because of the advantages that the would then enjoy. He is both sensible and realistic.
Samson is entirely literate in English, expresses himself well although he still has quite a strong Nyanja accent. He is one of the few of ‘our’ boys who will just phone up out of the blue to say that he’s fine, says how happy he is to be sponsored, and how much he appreciates it - and that he doesn’t’ need anything or want anything.
