Paul Nkhoma - school sponsorship
Report made by Johnny and Grant June 2008:
Sponsor: Alastair Harper and Sandy Paterson
Grade: 12
School: Chipata Day High School
Johnny and I went to Chipata and, after some difficulty, managed to track Paul down. He was not expecting us, and we just missed meeting him at his school. His class teacher said that he was working hard and that he was making good progress with average marks. He said that Paul’s chief attribute was ‘his great strength of character’. Paul seemed happy and enjoying his was schooling and his life in Chipata. This term he has been living in a single unfurnished room with no electricity. He does have a mattress and bedding. He meets up with his pals on a Saturday morning to discuss assignments and school projects. His English is very good and his speech is clear and easy to understand. He seems to have lost a bit of weight, and probably doesn’t have enough to eat.
He wants to do Pharmacy at Evelyn Hone in Lusaka next year and so needs Derrick to buy an application (about £10) for Evelyn Hone for application to College. He has chosen Pharmacy because, as he says, the conditions of employment are better than Nursing, and he will do some good in this profession.
Paul will write Grade 12 in November and his results will be out in February. So the earliest he can apply at Evelyn Hone would be in February for the June intake.
We bought Paul a mobile phone and talk time so that he can be in contact with us and his sponsors. It would seem that Paul does not have his own bank account so that Fiona cannot at present transfer money directly into his account without him having to go back to Mfuwe to fetch it. Also there is no way to transfer emergency funds if necessary.
