Report made by Johnny and Grant June 2008:

Sponsor:  Grant O’Brien

Grade 3

School:  Katemo Primary School

His class teacher, Mr Banda, says he is an average student doing very well.  He now uses his new artificial leg to walk normally and is now able to take part in some of the Phys. Ed. activities that he was unable to do previously.

Grant is sponsoring extra English lessons with:

Mrs Sellina Mwazima

Head, Mwandakwisano Community School

This year we arranged for Mbaza to fly (alone!) from Mfuwe to Lusaka to meet us when we arrived there ourselves from the UK.  We took Mbaza to the Zambia Italian Orthopaedic Hospital to get his prosthesis changed.  His normal left leg had grown 3½ cm in the year since Grant had his leg amputated and his prosthesis fitted.  He then flew back with us to Mfuwe.  We went out to his village to see his parents and teachers, and then took him back to Lusaka to get his new prosthesis fitted on our way back to the UK.  We put him back on the flight to Mfuwe - just in the nick of time - and he again flew alone back to Mfuwe on the day before our departure back to the UK.

In the future Mbaza will go to Lusaka each year in July (school holidays) to get his prosthesis changed as he continues to grow.  The taxi driver (named) Friday (cell:  0977841759) will pick him up on a Sunday evening and get him to the Zambia Italian Orthopaedic Hospital on the following Monday morning, accommodate him during the week, take him back to the Hospital for the new prosthesis fitting on the Friday, and get him to the airport in Lusaka for the return journey to Mfuwe on the Saturday morning.

Mbaza still has to be taken to school by bicycle using someone else’s bike.  The technicians at the Zambia Italian Orthopaedic Hospital said there was no reason that he shouldn’t ride a bike providing someone had the patience and skill to teach him to ride.  Grant would like to buy him a bike in the near future so that he becomes completely independent in getting back and forth to school.

Some further details of Mbaza are given elsewhere on this site.
