The refugee Birthday Party11 February, 2007 |
During the floods here at the end of January and the beginning of February, there was a sense of boredom and frustration in the camp. This was relieved by any excuse for a party or celebration. The generators were turned on specially so that we could all watch the Scotland-England rugby match, for example. The weekend of 10-11 Feb was the occasion for a birthday party. Ade from Flatdogs, Mark the general manage of Kapani and Tamarra one of the secretaries at Kapani all had their birthdays near this weekend. A whole rear haunch of kudu had been saved from the freezer in Flatdogs after the flooding started and cut off the power to the freezers, and this seemed the occasion to roast it.
Ade was down on the Airport road at 5:45 to buy charcoal and banana leaves to use to roast the kudu haunch. A pit was dug, the charcoal was lighted at the bottom of the pit, and the haunch was carefully wrapped in banana leaves and placed on top of the lighted charcoal. The whole thing was then covered over in the earth dug out of the pit. After about 5 hours it was dug out, and ceremoniously carried to the map room where we have all been eating during these stressful times.
This was also the occasion for a group photograph of the refugees!
