There are many villages and many, many farms around Mfuwe. These are populated with a happy, hard-working, basically prosperous people. Crops usually do not fail because of the predictable and regular rainy season from December to May. No one starves but on the other hand there is very little cash in circulation and it is a struggle for most families to educate their children. There is also very little money available for health care. Health insurance is unknown. It costs 400 Zambian Kwatcha (about US$0.20) for an examination at the Clinic. This is often waived because of lack of funds. Medication, if available, is free.
Despite the hardships, the people are happy, friendly and gracious. Johnny and I fell in love with them and made very many good friends there. We are very much looking forward to going back to Mfuwe to see them all again.
