The case side construction

Glueing the lower outside moulding in place

Here the lower strips of chestnut have already been glued and nailed in place around the whole of the lower edge of the case.  The bentside lower outside moulding, now mitred at its ends and cut to length, is being glued in place.  This moulding is quite thick and therefore rather stiff and, even though it was pre-bent to shape by heating it, required considerable force and clamping to glue it firmly to the outside of the lower chestnut strip.  The lower projection of the chestnut strip was used to clamp it at the bottom and the specially-made clamps were small enough to be placed below the liners to clamp the lower moulding near its top.  The glueing process needed to be carried out quickly and with a couple of 'dry-runs'.  However it was found to be possible to glue it accurately and quickly in place.
