A Franco-Flemish double-manual harpsichord, originally a transposing harpsichord made in Antwerp in 1617, and then ravalé in Paris, possibly by François Étienne Blanchet in 1750 and then in stages by Jacques Barberini, Paris, c.1775 and then by Nicolas Hoffman, 1786.

 

 

The lid hook, and lid-flap hinges and main lid hinges on the Franco-Flemish harpsichord.

 

             The exquisite moulding and casting of the lid hook and of the lid and lid-flap hinges.

 

  The brass of this hardware has been chased and fire gilt in a process known as ormolu.  This has been cleaned in the present restoration, but not restored as this was felt to be un-necessary.

There are no filled or unfilled holes under the hinges for any previous nails or screws, and this indicates that there have never been any previous hinges and, indeed, these hinges and hooks are typical of those found on furniture of the period around 1750.  These must therefore date from the 1750 ravalement.
