Thorung-La Pass

Monday, 6 December, 2010

Thorung Base Camp to Thorung-La Pass to Mukhtinath elevation: 4850 metres to 5416 metres and then DOWN to 3800 metres!  This was the highest point of our trek.

Thorung-La Pass is the highest trekking pass in the World at 5416 metres or 17,769 feet.  The pass is 1200 metres higher than the summit of Mont Blanc.  The descent from the Pass down to Mukhtinath on the other side is over 1600 metres or a drop of almost a vertical mile.  We felt a great sense of achievement to have been able to make it over the pass with no symptoms of altitude sickness, and no soreness nor aches and pains.  The temperature at the top of the pass was about -30 to -35 Cº.  In other words, it was bloody cold!!!
