The case-side mouldings and joins

A plethora of mitred joins!

In order to avoid any downward pressure on the bridge in the bass part of the compass where the strings are thick and the string tension is great, the bass hitchpin rail is raised up higher than the mouldings along the bentside where the rest of the hitchpins are placed.  This gives rise to a particularly complex and interesting combination of angles and joins as can be seen in this photograph.
