Grant and Roger replace the chimney coping piece |
The chimney of the fireplace in the small dorm had been open and letting in rainwater for a long time. The aperture of the chimney was about 30cmx30cm, and so it let in a LOT of water. This was causing a fungus growth on the ceilings in both rooms using the common chimney, and even some lovely fungus on the brick chimney itself. When we came into Culra in July we made a coping piece to cover the chimney and keep out the rain. But, after putting it up, we found that the diameter of the covered flue was too small and this did not allow all of the smoke from the fireplace to go up the chimney. Cough, cough, splutter, splutter. The covered flue and coping piece did prevent rainwater from entering the chimney and causing mould growth in the ceilings around the chimney, but it no longer worked as a properly functioning fireplace.
A new coping piece with a larger flue to the design above was made in August, and we installed it during the Work Party. This was done by M.O. Grant and his able assistant Roger.
